Horse insurance

"Horse sense is the thing a horse has which keeps it from betting on people."

W.C. Fields

Owning a horse can be great fun and often a wonderful dream come true. It is also a well known saying that if your horse can get into trouble it will. So if you own a horse long enough chances are you will find yourself in a situation where a call out to your vet nary is inevitable. Ensuring your horse is well and healthy is an added cost that has to be taken into consideration. Vets bill can mount up enormously and the worry of settling the bill can be a worry that need not give you sleepless nights. It is important to s tick to a regular vaccination and de worming programme that will help to keep your horse in good health and in the long run to protect it from serious illness. Some vets recommend that horses are de wormed every six to eight weeks. Alternatively, a horse could be on a continuous de wormer like Strongid-C and receive additional boluses of de wormer at key times during the year.

It is important to have your horse inoculated for tetanus and equine encephalomyelitis at least once a year and receive the influenza/rhino vaccine between two and four times a year, depending on the animal's risk of exposure. Insurance companies usually offer a wide range of cover that begins with a first-ridden to the top class competition horse. You can insure bloodstock and breeding as well as opting to cover your horsebox.
